"You're a fourth year now." -- Attending

Please do not say that. Do not say that I am beginning my last year of medical school. Do not say that I am the senior medical student. Do not say I determine the patient's plan. And please do not say I will be a...

Final Year, Hypothetically Speaking

After 18 months of hospital placements, today marks the first day of the first rotation where I am one of the senior medical students on the team. The seeming upgrade in role wasn't terribly evident: due to my end of year exams back in Cork, I started this particular rotation a ...

Between Boards

When the EMTs brought Gladys through the automatic doors she was struggling for each breath. The CPAP machine pulled from the ambulance forced oxygen deep into her tired lungs, but the ashen color of her wrinkled skin matched the woeful numbers blinking from the pulse ox on her fi...

"ALL of the biopsies came back negative for malignancy!! [...] I am tentatively cancer-free." - Friend

I cannot find any news more amazing or uplifting than this!

Farewell From the Other Side of the Fence

Graduation was just a few days ago and the idea of being a doctor is starting to set in. The feelings are surreal. Seeing all my classmates and faculty dressed in black robes, dignified and non-stressed was just the medicine I...
